I wanted to take on the challenge of reinterpreting (stripping...) some of my earlier electronic/ambient works into piano compositions that would be fun and interesting to play live. Of course, some of these songs had 30+ tracks of music that needed to be distilled down into one piano track while still maintaining the essence of the original piece. This time, I took a completely new approach. Each of the songs on this CD was recorded in one take with no overdubs, no MIDI, no quantization (those of you that know me have just fainted). To warm up, I'd often improv around in that key until I forgot that the "tape" was rolling. Many of them came out so well that I left them in the final mix (and three of them became their own songs...)!
The resulting recording is so much more satisfying and emotional and soulful than anything I've ever done before. Stripped not only soothes you, but perhaps also challenges you, inspires you, and surprises you from time to time. If you let it, this CD will tell you a story of relentless hope, romantic dreams, and real triumph. This is much of my life, if you strip away much of the production... and surprisingly, it's not what I expected.
